Theme: Back Lighting

Theme Description: The light source is facing the camera and the subject will either be in silhouette or have rim light.

Entries must be logged in at the meeting by 7pm on the evening of the competition. Standard white matting is mandatory and please label the back with your Name, Level, Color or BW and Title.

Competitions are monthly (4th Thursday of each month – in this case the 5th due to holiday) and are open to Paid LPC Members. All interested non-members are welcome to visit, listen to critiques and join in if you would like to officially join the club! Judges are different each month and come from all over!

Theme description: An image taken behind the subject. Just because the image is taken from behind doesn’t mean that there can be no face or front.

“Geometry”: An image that contains the elements of geometric shapes. For example triangles, squares, circles etc.

“Framed”: Elements within the image frame the subject. This can be done with trees, buildings, shadows, etc.

As with most competition themes, “Communication” can be interpreted in many different ways, so be creative and use the theme to create something new and unique to share!

Competition Results: 2018-09-27 – “Summer 2018”

From last night’s “Summer” open theme competition. We had great member turn-out and some stunning images. We had a total of 99 entries across all categories: 31 in Novice Color, 25 in Novice Monochrome, 23 in Advanced Color, and 20 in Advanced Monochrome.

Congratulations to all the winners and to all the first-timers submitting in a competition. It’s common for different competition themes to have varying numbers of entries. You will get more chances to hear critiques from the judges and to win the ribbons. Keep submitting!

This competition’s theme: “Summer 2018

This is an open competition and the only requirement is that the image must have been captured by the photographer between May 25, 2018 and September 26, 2018 (the “summer” season for the club). You may submit up to 4 prints (2 monochrome plus 2 color). Good luck!

The idea is to find images that have complementary colors in them. It could be yellow and purple flowers, blue and orange bicycles…etc… here is a color wheel for guidance.

Join us for February Competition Night with theme “Liquid” and Judge : Joshua Taylor

 

Josh has presented photography workshops at the Smithsonian National

Orchid Show, Edith J. Carrier Arboretum at JMU, U.S. Botanic Garden,

Brookside Gardens, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, American Horticultural

Society Garden School, Adkins Arboretum, and Longwood Gardens. In

addition to being a former Canon Camera instructor, Josh speaks at

camera and garden clubs, judges photographic competitions, and exhibits

his photographs in gallery shows. He is a member of Garden Writers

Association, National Association of Photoshop Professionals, and member

and past president of the Northern Virginia Photographic Society. Josh was

voted best garden club speaker in 2005 and was a judge for the 2009

Garden Writers Association National Media Awards and the 2010 Mid-

Atlantic Nature Photography Expo. Longwood Gardens selected Josh as its

Instructor of the Month (October 2010) and was a selected photographer to

assist the public in photographing Bruce Munro’s Light: Installations (2012).
